Formatting and ATS Compatibility (1–15)
- Single-column layout with no tables or text boxes
- Saved as .docx or text-based PDF
- Standard section headings (Summary, Skills, Experience, Education)
- Standard, readable font at 10.5–12pt
- Contact info in the body, not header/footer
- Consistent date format throughout
- No embedded images, icons or charts for critical content
- Margins between 0.5" and 1"
- File named professionally (e.g., "FirstName_LastName_Resume.pdf")
- No headers/footers containing essential information
- Bullet points used instead of long paragraphs
- Consistent bullet style throughout
- Bold used sparingly for titles, not overused
- No unusual special characters or symbols
- Tested through an ATS resume checker
Content Quality (16–35)
- Professional summary or objective tailored to this specific job
- Top keywords from the job description included naturally
- Every bullet point shows a result, not just a duty
- Quantified achievements wherever possible (numbers, percentages)
- Strong action verbs starting each bullet
- No generic filler phrases ("hardworking," "team player" with no evidence)
- Job titles are clear and industry-standard
- Skills section has 8–15 focused, relevant skills
- No outdated or irrelevant skills listed
- Education section includes degree, institution and graduation year
- Relevant certifications included and up to date
- Projects section included if relevant (especially for freshers)
- Every claim on the resume is accurate and defensible in an interview
- Employment gaps briefly addressed if present
- LinkedIn URL included and profile is up to date
- Portfolio/GitHub link included if relevant to the field
- Length appropriate to experience level (see our length guide)
- No irrelevant personal details (marital status, religion, photo unless required)
- Most relevant and recent experience given the most detail
- Career progression clearly visible where applicable
Language and Proofing (36–45)
- No spelling errors anywhere, especially in the first few lines
- No grammar errors or inconsistent verb tense
- Past roles in past tense, current role in present tense
- Consistent capitalization for job titles and company names
- No repeated words or phrases across multiple bullets
- Read the resume aloud to catch awkward phrasing
- Had at least one other person proofread it
- Checked contact details for typos (phone number, email)
- Consistent formatting of numbers (e.g., "40%" vs "40 percent")
- No leftover template placeholder text
Strategic Fit (46–50)
- Resume tailored specifically to this job description
- Confirmed the resume format (chronological/combination) fits your situation
- Verified you meet or are close to the core requirements before applying
- Cover letter (if required) complements rather than repeats the resume
- Final version saved and named correctly before submission
