Attendance Percentage Calculator: How Many Classes Can You Actually Miss?

Published 25 August 2026 Updated 1 September 2026 5 min read

Attendance percentage is simple in concept but easy to miscalculate in your head, especially mid-semester when you're trying to figure out your safe margin for missing more classes.

The Attendance Formula

Attendance % = (Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Held) × 100

Example: If 60 classes have been held and you attended 48, your attendance is (48 ÷ 60) × 100 = 80%.

Why 75% Is the Common Threshold

Most Indian universities and AICTE-affiliated engineering colleges require a minimum 75% attendance to be eligible to sit for end-semester exams, though some allow a condoned range (e.g., 65–74%) with valid documentation like medical certificates. Always check your specific university/college attendance policy, as exact thresholds and condonation rules vary.

How to Calculate How Many More Classes You Can Miss

To find your safe margin, you need three numbers: classes already held, classes you've attended, and total classes expected for the full semester (based on the timetable).

Formula for maximum classes you can still miss:

Maximum future misses = Total expected classes − (Required attendance % × Total expected classes) − (Classes missed so far)

Worked Example

Suppose the semester has 100 total expected classes, you've attended 70 out of 80 held so far (missed 10), and your university requires 75%.

  • Minimum classes you must attend overall = 75% × 100 = 75
  • You've already attended 70
  • You still need to attend at least 5 more classes out of the remaining 20
  • So you can afford to miss up to 15 more classes and still hit exactly 75%

In practice, aim for a buffer above the minimum — sudden illness or emergencies can eat into your margin quickly.

What Happens If You Fall Below the Threshold

Consequences vary by institution but commonly include: exam debarment for that semester, a mandatory condonation fee and application process, or in some cases a requirement to repeat the semester. Check with your department early if you're close to the line — don't wait until exam eligibility lists are published.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 75% attendance required at every Indian university?

75% is the most common minimum threshold and is widely referenced by AICTE-affiliated institutions, but the exact rule, condonation range, and consequences for falling short vary by university and even by department. Always confirm with your own institution.

Do medical leaves count against my attendance percentage?

Typically yes, in terms of raw calculation — but many universities offer a "condonation" process that allows students with valid medical documentation to still be considered eligible even slightly below the standard threshold. This is handled through petition to your department, not through the raw percentage formula itself.
